Development of acoustic system for electric vehicles

Andaltec Centro Tecnológico and Proinsur have developed an innovative acoustic system for electric vehicles that is currently not available on the market. The R&D project, which is supported by the Centre for Technological and Industrial Development (CDTI), has resulted in the creation of an innovative device that combines three functions: The Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) is an acoustic warning device and an acoustic driving aid. The AVAS is a system that must be activated when the vehicle is mooving at speeds between 0 and 20 kilometres per hour. The system emits an artificial sound that is continuous and similar to the noise generated by an internal combustion vehicle. The audible warning device, or horn, is a driver-activated system designed to provide an audible warning of the vehicle’s presence. In addition, the acoustic driving aid is a system designed to alert the driver to any unusual circumstances pertaining to the condition of the vehicle.

The development process for this acoustic device has been complex, requiring the overcoming of numerous technological challenges. The device must be mounted on the exterior of the vehicle, so it has undergone rigorous durability testing in accordance with both the European standard and the requirements of vehicle manufacturers.

Furthermore, the sound produced at low speeds must not exceed 65 decibels and must be deactivated when the vehicle exceeds a speed of 20 kilometres per hour. The project is highly complex, as the tone emitted must change frequency in line with the engine acceleration, and therefore requires the design and implementation of a digital control system to perform this function. Additionally, the regulations stipulate that electric vehicles must incorporate a specific sound that warns when reversing.

Due to the complexity of the project, Andaltec’s Engineering, Projects, Laboratory and Electronics Departments have been involved, offering a comprehensive service that has enabled the work to be successfully completed.
