Development of food packaging with innovative plastics incorporating a minimum of 30% recycled material. This initiative is co-financed by the ‘Corporación Tecnológica de Andalucía’ business R&D&I incentive programme and is led by SP Group, with the participation of the University of Jaén and Andaltec. The main novelty of this project is that it focuses on the reuse of polyolefins left over from SP Group’s food packaging production process. Polyolefins are a thermoplastic in which there has been little advancement in circularity until now.
The main objective of the project is to develop highly innovative plastic materials and structures based on polyolefins, polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), post-industrial recyclates and PA/PE multilayer waste that meet the quality standards required for the manufacture of plastic food contact packaging. In addition, for flexible food packaging, the aim is to use at least 30% recycled plastic material. The ultimate purpose is to establish a traceable and closed-loop external recycling system from the start of production through a single recycler and partner.
