This is a completed European project that involved the development of sustainable and intelligent food packaging with temperature and shelf-life sensors. The innovative packaging for fruit and fish extends the shelf life of the food, thereby increasing its marketability in more distant markets.
The Susfoflex project concentrated on the investigation of innovative smart packaging solutions utilising advanced printing techniques and nanomaterials. The project resulted in the development of packaging made from bioplastic, which not only protects the product but also extends its shelf life. The packaging also incorporates sensors that utilise colour coding to indicate whether the food is in optimal condition or has begun to spoil. This new technology offers a far more effective and reliable way of determining whether food is still fit for consumption than the traditional ‘best before’ date printed on packaging.
Andaltec spearheaded the work package dedicated to demonstration and small-scale production, while also assuming responsibility for the packaging degradability studies.
